Informal research by Albert on the most popular anime series:

FMA, Bleach, and Naruto are the big winners. Death Note is a strong 2nd with Fruits Basket(!) 3rd. After that, it drops off significantly. Advent Children/FF 7/Kingdom Hearts. Inuyasha, Ouran Host Club, and Hellsing round out the top 10.

For comparison, here is the top 10 according to Anime News Network. This ranking is by the number of people who have reviewed a series multiplied by the rating. Of course this is more "all time" as opposed to "recent"

According to surveys conducted by the marketing research firm Streetwise, as many as 69% of people between the ages of 16 and 29 watch anime on a regular basis.

Funimation's own research shows that up to 40% of the videos uploaded to YouTube are anime-related.
