TheGeographyOfFerrenThe Nations of Favencia(Hey, the continent has a name now!) The Kingdom of Ferren The Kingdom of FerrenThe geography of Ferren is critical to understanding its national personality. It is a series of large, fertile valleys penned in by the Ferralis Mountains to the north and west and the Kyrnheld mountains to the south. To the east lie the The Wilds, a blanket term for the foothills that lie between the valleys of Ferren and the Kobuk Ocean. In essence, Ferren is a nation comprised almost entirely of borders. The natural geography of the area creates a long, thin strip of arable land, nurtured by the great Alsys and Neifont rivers. Major exports: Steel, Stone, Grain, Fruit, Mercenaries. People are known as: Ferrens, Feral (derogatory), Valley Folk. The Nobles and Cities of Ferren The Free Barons of KyrnheldTo the south, as tall and proud as the Kyrnheld mountains themselves, stand the scattered city-states of the Free Barons of Kyrnheld. The fierce inhabitants of the mountains have stood against the forces of the frost giants in the south for centuries, and many regard them as savages. Major exports: Gems, Furs, Mithral. Known as: Freemen, Kyrnmen, Snowmen (derogatory). The Free Barons: Baron Caetan, the Thundering Fox The Kingdom of UminumOnce, the kingdoms of Uminum and Ferren were united. But as the years passed, the people of Ferren grew apart from those of Uminum. Ferren montagnards believed that the inhabitants of the rolling plains of Uminum were growing soft, and with harsh winters cutting off the two regions entirely for four months at a time, they grew used to their independence. Secession and civil war soon followed, and the hardened soldiers of Ferren easily bested the famed cavalry of Uminum, who held no advantage in the mountain passes. The nobles of Uminum still harbor a grudge after the stinging defeat, and matters only became worse in the wake of the Inheritor's War 15 years ago. Major exports: Lumber, Livestock, Grain, Whining. Known as: Uminites, Uminian, Minimums (derogatory). Ruled by: King Randall Drake III from the Drake's Perch, a castle in the Uminite capital of Garian. Major nobles (all major cities are named after their ruler): Count Huston The Seljuk SultanateThe flood plains of the northwest are home to the empire of the Seljuks, forged from desert sands and famed for their majestic architecture. The Seljuk people enjoy a close bond with the elements themselves, and are credited with the discovery and creation of magic. The ancient Seljuk Academy recruits, trains, and regulates nearly all magic-users in the world, acting as a neutral body independent of the Sultan and his politics. Major exports: Textiles, Magic, Salt. Known as: Seljuks, Sons of the Desert, Baldies (derogatory) Sultan Sanjay ad-Dallum The WildsThe lightly wooded foothills to the east remain largely unsettled, due to a scattered collection of tribes who brook no unwanted intrusion. Tribes of Raptorans own the higher ground, while rival bands of ogres carve out dens and warrens for themselves in the rocky hills. (Raptorans, ogres... halflings?) The Golanor WastesThe vast Golanor Wastes are home to an uncounted number of nomadic tribes of herdsmen, following their cattle to the many watering holes and grazing areas that dot the land. The Federation of KatunAfter a bloody conflict lasting nearly a hundred years, the seafaring clans of the Kunban archipelago have been united under the flag of House Katun, which employed a smooth combination of diplomacy, perseverance, and brutally applied violence to bring the civil war to an end. While some of the lesser noble houses still chafe under the rule of the Archduke, most houses welcome the peace. The next task for the war-ravaged nation is to re-establish contact with the outside world, which has been nearly impossible for decades. Major exports: Textiles, Lumber, Fruit. Known as: Kunbar, Kunbanites, Shut-ins (derogatory) Ruling House (ruled by Archduke): House Katun Greater Houses (Dukes): House Amash (the only Greater House that was not allied with Katun at the end of the conflict) Lesser Houses (Lords): House Naga Lost Houses (dead): House Liadon |
